The essential idea

Leonardo Ricci matters because he treated architecture as a way of shaping human life, not merely as the production of objects. That conviction remains central to ESSENCE.

Ricci’s work and writing remind us that architecture becomes meaningful when space, material, atmosphere and daily life belong to one human-centered vision rather than to a detached formal exercise.

01

Architecture should begin with lived experience.

Ricci did not understand architecture as an image that could be judged from a distance. He saw it as an environment to be lived from within: through movement, light, relationship, intimacy, exposure and the changing emotional condition of space.

Material character can hold memory as much as structure.
02

Material and form should carry human meaning.

The point of materiality is not visual effect alone. Texture, weight, light absorption, joints and weathering all shape how a place is understood over time. A residence becomes more humane when material choices are made for experience, dignity and continuity rather than novelty.

Wellbeing is architectural, not decorative.

Ricci’s legacy connects naturally with ESSENCE Wellness. Light, privacy, proportion, silence, air, retreat and contact with nature are not accessories added after design. They are part of the way architecture either supports or undermines better living every day.

04

Legacy means more than preservation.

To leave a legacy in architecture is not simply to make a building old enough to survive. It is to create spaces that remain culturally meaningful, emotionally intelligent and adaptable over time. That is close to how ESSENCE understands enduring value in residential work.

05

The relevance today is practical, not nostalgic.

Remembering Ricci is useful only if his thinking sharpens present architectural judgment. For ESSENCE, that means resisting generic answers and continuing to design homes where atmosphere, climate, materiality, wellness and legacy remain inseparable.

Ricci’s centenary is relevant not as cultural ornament, but as a reminder that architecture still has to answer a human question: how should people live, feel and endure in the spaces they inhabit?
